Could you be our new Tenant Board Member?

This exciting role is really important and requires time and commitment.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Attending board member and committee meetings
  • Reading papers and information

We're looking for motivated enthusiastic South Tyneside Council Tenants who are passionate about improving Homes and Communities in South Tyneside.

Independent board members

Sarah French

Sarah French

  • Sarah is the CEO of Sight Services, a Charity aiming to allow visually impaired people to enjoy the quality of life others take for granted. Sarah has a Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership.
  • Sarah has experience in strategic planning, investment, asset, risk and operational management and marketing and communications

Gwen Smith

Gwen Smith 2

  • Gwen qualified as an Environmental Health Officer in 2006, and has a LLM in Environmental Law from DeMontford University.
  • Gwen currently works as Team Manager within the Public Protection and Neighbourhoods Team Service at a local Council. She has a wide range of knowledge and experience within the private housing sector. 

Lisa Coverdale

Lisa Coverdale

  • Lisa supports a first class honours degree in Business Management with experience in change management, leadership, risk and strategic planning.
  • Lisa has over 18 years of experience in Social Housing managing Customer Services, Community Alarms, Resident Engagement and Marketing and Communications.

Jon Knight

Jon Knight

  • Jon has Board member experience as an Executive Director for St Johns Ambulance and now CEO for The Together Initiative.
  • Jon expects his appointment to be a unique opportunity to help the organisation not only provide quality homes and services to the people of South Tyneside, but also to understand how the voice of our residents can shape the future of housing in the community.
  • Jon is keen to develop his board level experience further and has been appointed as the Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee.

Tenant board members 

Michael Laidler

Michael Laidler

  • Michael is an involved tenant whose current role is that of Tenant Inspector - this has involved the interviewing of South Tyneside Homes' staff as part of the tenant inspection process.
  • Michael was one of the tenants involved in the compilation of the 2013/14 & 2014/15 Tenants' Annual reports

Ronnie Miller

Ronnie Miller

  • Ronnie is our new tenant board member with 30 years experience working in roles within the Ship Building industry, ranging from Plater, Shipwright, Shop Steward and Team Leader, Ronnie's career then led him to leadership roles in Swan Hunters and Newcastle City Works where he worked until his retirement. 
  • Ronnie also brings a whole new perspective to the Board of South Tyneside as the first registered blind board member. This does not stop Ronnie participating fully in board, committee and Board Strategic Planning Events. Embracing new and evolving technology to assist and support him, Ronnie uses read aloud technology, Alexa tech and Bluetooth hearing aids to read board and committee papers.
  • Ronnie is renowned for his fresh sense of humour and self-deprecating jokes!  

Sean McDonagh

Sean McDonagh

  • Previously a Co-optee on our Housing and Corporate Services Committee, Sean was successful in his application to become a Board member in 2020. Sean's interest in local housing issues originated when the Decent Homes initiative was implemented in 2006 and has continued to grow since then. 
  • Sean has experience in residents' groups within the borough, time on the "Making Jarrow Dementia Friendly" group and his work as a Local Authority Governor for two local Primary Schools, Sean has a wide knowledge of the needs of the residents of the borough.
  • Sean previously worked in local shipping and logistics and then went on to develop his knowledge by gaining a Higher Education certificate in Computing and Mathematics.

Council nominated members

Wilf Flynn

Wilf Flynn

  • Wilf has been involved in the community of South Tyneside since joining the Amalgamated society of Woodworkers and the Labour party in 1971. He is a retired Maintenance Joiner having worked in Housing and Public Maintenance for 43 years for South Tyneside Council and South Tyneside Homes.
  • Wilf is currently Vice Chair of the Tyne and Wear Pension fund, Chair of the Hebburn Community Area Forum and member of the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Authority.
  • Wilf is a council nominated board member. He has been a Councillor since 2019.

Joyce Welsh

Joyce Welsh

  • Joyce has spent 7 years as a dedicated member of South Tyneside Homes Board as a tenant member. She has been a loyal Rotarian for 7 years supporting causes close to her heart. Joyce has also worked for St Clare's a s a fundraiser for over 11 years. 
  • Joyce is a council nominated board member. Joyce has been a Councillor for 11 years.

Audrey Huntley

Audrey Huntley

  • Audrey has been the Chair of Governors at Epinay special needs school in Jarrow for the last 8 years. She was responsible for leading an OFSTED rated outstanding group of staff, to make sure young people get a bespoke education to achieve the very best they can. 
  • She is an experienced administrator, with skills include time management, project management, finance, and communication skills. Audrey considers herself resourceful and always eager to undertake new challenges.
  • Audrey is a council nominated board member. She has been a Councillor since 2021.

Richard Porthouse

Richard Porthouse

  • Richard's passion for housing came following his appointment as Vice Chair to the board of South Tyneside Housing Ventures Trust.
  • He brings a wealth of experience to his role as a board member from his work as a production manager, a project manager and an area manager. Richard has worked at home and abord in heavy industry including fabrication, shipbuilding and nuclear power stations. He was awarded a commendation for his role during an incident on an offshore oil platform.
  • Richard wants to make sure quality services are delivered to residents with health and safety as a driver.
  • Richard is a council nominated board member and has been a Councillor since 2010.
